How To Print From Your iPhone And iPad With AirPrint

Thanks to useful apps such as Pages and Numbersit is also a piece of cake on Apple's mobile devices to create beautiful text documents or to produce clear spreadsheets. Yet in this digital age it is sometimes easy to print things, but the USB cable of your printer does not fit in your iPhone or iPad. To circumvent this, you could email a copy to your Mac or PC for printing, but that is not necessary. Apple has come up with a faster solution that you can also print from your iPhone and iPad: AirPrint. As we are used to from Apple, AirPrint works very easily. The only pity is that many old printers do not yet have this feature. Fortunately, the list of printers that do support it keeps getting bigger; so you only have a suitable printer and cartridges required.

1. Set up WiFi for AirPrint

To use AirPrint, you must use the same Wi-Fi network as your printer. Open the Settings app, go to 'Wi-Fi' and choose the network to connect.

2. Select the page

Then open the app from which you want to print something, for example Photos. Tap the photo and then the Share button at the bottom left. Now choose 'Print' in the bottom row.

3. Select the printer

iOS does not automatically know which printer you want to use. When you first start printing from an app, the app asks you to choose a device. To do this, tap on 'Select printer'.

4. More printers

Now you will see a list of all AirPrint printers available in the network that your iPhone can print with. Tap the printer with which you want to print the photo.

5. More options

If you have selected the correct printer, you can still set things such as the color of the photo under the 'Options' heading. Set them to your preferences and tap 'Print'.

6. Other button

Sometimes you cannot print files via the Share button, but that does not mean that AirPrints is impossible. Open a mail, tap the arrow at the bottom and choose 'Print'.

No AirPrint?

Don't have a printer that supports AirPlay? There are a number of other ways. You can also print via email. This is a super nice solution in a business environment - anyone with the e-mail address can print something. You create a special e-mail address for your printer. Add what you want to print in the attachment of an e-mail. When you send the email, your printer will automatically print your documents. The advantage of this is that you can print something from anywhere, anytime.

Print via an app

There are also apps that you can print with. These connect directly to your printer. You can easily log in and select a document via the website and then print it out. This is useful if you have an Android phone, because they do not support AirPrint. Therefore, there are different ways to print something from the comfort of your home. Do you choose AirPrint, an app or do you just send your printer an email? It is all possible!

AirPrint And Cloud Print: Many Paths Lead To The Printer

There are a variety of ways to connect a printer to a computer. The technology has evolved in recent years. As an alternative to USB and traditional network printers, some new ways have been established to send the print job on the road. While Apple has offered a comfortable interface for wireless communication between a printer and an iOS device or Mac since 2010 with AirPrint, more and more cloud print-enabled applications are now entering the market.

AirPrint: Print with Apple

AirPrint makes it easy to print photos and documents from a Mac, iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. The AirPrint interface is integrated with many printer models. The device is very comfortable because no printer-specific drivers are needed. Only one access point is required. Some printers even offer the option of having their own hotspot for the iOS device. In this case, the devices connect without an external access point.

Print with Cloud Print over the Internet

The best-known representative of cloud print services is certainly Google. More specifically, printing through the cloud is merely communication over an internet service with a corresponding printer or computer. Thus, print jobs without a complicated configuration can be started even beyond the limits of your own network. A USB printer can be used for this purpose, but the connected computer must be ready for the job.

Alternatively, there are cloud-enabled printers that can establish a direct Internet connection. The device is simple and can be done on such devices without driver installation. The connection to Google Cloud Print is also fast. All you have to do in Google Chrome is to enable the feature in Settings and add a compatible printer.

Tip: To check if the setup was successful, you can go to Google's overview page to see your cloud printers.

Mobile printing

How you send your print job on trips, of course, is up to you. With AirPrint already well integrated into the iOS ecosystem, the system offers the greatest comfort when printing from an iPhone or iPad. The advantage of a cloud-capable printer, on the other hand, is definitely tempting when you're traveling a lot.

Unfortunately, Google does not provide an official Cloud Print App for iOS. The company only builds Google Cloud Print into its own apps. If you still want to print to a Google Cloud Print-enabled printer through another app, you'll need a third-party app, such as PrintCentral Pro. Google offers a list of other applications on a support page.

The choice of printer is large for both interfaces. When you're looking for a compatible printer, the Otto Office printer overview is handy, as it simply filters for AirPrint and Cloud Print. Simply click on the desired printer category (laser, inkjet, multifunction printer) and under "mobile printing" select the option "Apple AirPrint" or "Google Cloud Print". Now all corresponding printers are listed, with the detail pages listing all important data about the printers.
